Inbox Marketer has recently published our annual 2017 North American benchmark report:

There are many components of email for marketers to master. Great email marketing is 30% art and 70% science. Focusing on what matters most leads to significant improvements.
2016 saw substantial growth in both volume and frequency. A June 2016 survey of US marketers conducted by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and Demand Metric found that email has a median Return on Ad Spending of 122%—more than four times higher than any other marketing channel examined, including paid search, social media, or social ads.
